Exciting news + announcements from LF Europe

  • Open Is Sovereign: Why Europe’s Digital Future Must Be Built on Global Open Source Ecosystems

    • Across Europe, “digital sovereignty” has become a defining political and economic priority. The concern is real: in an age where code defines competitiveness, no nation or region can outsource its technological destiny. Yet too often, the debate around sovereignty is framed as a binary choice between global collaboration and regional control, essentially between openness and protectionism. That’s a false choice. True sovereignty is not about isolation; it’s about mastery of critical resources based on a full understanding of how modern software is built. And for the digital realm, the surest path to mastery runs through open source.
    • So, the question is – how? Read Gabriele Columbro’s blog to see why open source is the foundation of Europe’s digital autonomy.
  • Linux Foundation Europe is excited to participate in FOSDEM 2026!
    • FOSDEM is one of Europe’s most important gatherings for free and open source software communities, a place where developers, researchers, and open source advocates come together to collaborate, learn, and build the future of digital innovation.
    • This year, LF Europe will showcase both global and European-led open source projects across cloud, telco, hardware, energy, security, and embedded systems. FOSDEM attendees will be able to explore:
  • LF Europe at DINAcon 2025—Paula Grzegorzewska on Open Source & Digital Sovereignty
    • Paula Grzegorzewska, Strategic Partnerships Senior Manager at Linux Foundation Europe, spoke at DINAcon 2025 in Bern, where she delivered the talk “First, recognition, next – strategy. On open source in European politics.”
    • In her session, Paula explored how the EU’s recognition of open source as a key driver of economic value and innovation is reshaping digital sovereignty strategies across Europe. She addressed core questions at the intersection of openness and control:
      • How autonomy and collaboration can reinforce each other
      • How European and national policies can support open source globally
      • Lessons learned from public investment in open technologies
      • Common pitfalls to avoid and the most promising strategic advances
    • Paula’s background in digital policy, open technologies, and European public sector transformation including her work co-authoring the European Commission’s landmark 2021 open source economic impact study made her contribution especially timely as governments accelerate their open source agendas.
  • Mirko Boehm Joins European Resilience Summit (ERS) Advisory Board
    • We are excited to announce that Mirko Boehm, Senior Director of Community Development at LF Europe, has joined the European Resilience Summit Advisory Board. His long-standing leadership in open source and deep engagement in Europe’s digital ecosystem will help strengthen the Summit’s mission toward a more resilient future. Meet Mirko and the full Advisory Board at ERS Paris.

Margo

  • Margo Preview Release 1: Advancing Interoperability at the edge - Coming Soon!
    • Margo Preview Release 1 (PR1) marks a major milestone toward delivering interoperable lifecycle management at scale, across the edge ecosystem. Planned for December 2025,  PR1 offers vendors an early technical preview of the Margo specification, including an open source sandbox, enabling them to prototype applications, devices, and workload fleet managers while providing invaluable feedback before the general release later in 2026. Supporting assets include published specification content, a sandbox environment, updated communications, and a structured feedback program.
    • PR1 delivers clear value across key personas: industrial end users can begin validating interoperability use cases; application vendors can explore Margo conform application packaging and device vendors can prototype hosting Margo apps and follow interoperable deployment workflows; and fleet management software providers can test how the Margo APIs help to observe and lifecycle manage multi-vendor fleets.
    • PR1 focuses on community engagement and validation through a structured feedback program for both members and non-members.
    • Stay tuned for the announcement on margo.org

OpenSSF

  • Recap: Open Source Security Week in BelgiumHighlights from Ghent to Brussels
    • Linux Foundation Europe, OpenSSF, and CEPS hosted a full week of discussions in Ghent and Brussels focused on open source security, the CRA, and Europe’s evolving cybersecurity landscape. From in-depth developer workshops to high-level policy forums, sessions helped clarify CRA responsibilities, timelines, and practical support available to maintainers and organizations.
    • Speakers from major open source projects, industry, and EU institutions emphasized the importance of upstream collaboration, aligning regulation with real-world workflows, and strengthening the digital commons through secure, open ecosystems. The week also highlighted the growing cooperation between policymakers and open source communities as Europe prepares for CRA implementation.
    • Read the full recap on how we’re turning policy into practical action for a more resilient future.
  • SBOMs in the Era of the CRA—Toward a Unified and Actionable Framework
    • A new blog by Madalin Neag (OpenSSF), Kate Stewart (Linux Foundation), and David A. Wheeler (OpenSSF) explains how SBOMs are shifting from optional best practice to a core legal and operational requirement under the EU Cyber Resilience Act and emerging global standards. With regulators converging on interoperable, machine-readable formats like SPDX and CycloneDX, the focus now is on making SBOMs actionable through automation, provenance, and vulnerability context. OpenSSF tools such as Protobom, BomCTL, and SBOMit help turn SBOM data into real security insight.
    • Read the full blog to learn how a unified SBOM approach can strengthen global software resilience.

PowSyBl

  • Nicolas Omont of Artelys recently presented a session at LF Energy Summit Europe on “PowSyBl: Grid Modeling at the Core of Europe’s Power Grid Planification and Operation”. Review a recap and watch a video of the session.
  • Dan Brown of the Linux Foundation presented an overview of PowSyBl at the recent LF Europe Roadshow in Ghent. View the slides.

Rise

  • The RISE Project is deep in planning for 2026, focused as always on how we can best serve the RISC-V software ecosystem. In addition to a number of events and webinars, we will be working over the next year on a number of RFPs and relationships with other projects, including the Yocto Project.
  • There have also been some changes on the board. Tenstorrent has now joined the RISE Project board, and there is one more opening available among the 13 seats. If your organization has an interest in moving up, or even joining the project for the first time, we are always interested in enabling fellow travelers to contribute to this vital work. Contact us at info@riseproject.dev or through the website, or talk to us at an upcoming event.
