Exciting news + announcements from LF Europe
- Last month, LF Europe was actively involved in several key engagements during Open Source Week 2025 in Brussels, helping to advance open source efforts across Europe. Highlights include our participation in:
- CHAOSScon Europe 2025, where we launched the new CHAOSS Working Group on Funding Impact Measurements with Sovereign Tech Agency, building on "Toolkit for measuring the impact of public funding on OSS development”
- SIMPL Annual Community Event, as part focusing on the EC dataspace initiative and introducing "Simpl-Open, Simpl-Labs, and Simpl-Live."
- EU Open Source Awards, celebrating excellence in open source through the European Open Source Academy, which promotes existing projects and actors while fostering training and awareness.
- FOSDEM 2025, followed by an evening reception to celebrate open source and the EU Open Source Policy Summit, supported by the Sovereign Tech Agency, OpenSSF, LF Education, CNCF, and LF Europe
- Key Takeaways this month:
- DeepSeek: DeepSeek has underscored the strong connection between open source, competitiveness, and sovereignty. Now, Europe must develop its own strategy to leverage these opportunities.
- Global Cyberpolicy WG: A Joint Effort by OpenSSF and LF Europe,
The launch of the OpenSSF + LF Europe Global Cyberpolicy Working Group marks a critical step in addressing cybersecurity and policy concerns, demonstrating how the open source community is proactively responding to global regulatory needs. - Regulatory Concerns with New EU and U.S. Administrations. With political changes in both Europe and the U.S., there is growing concern about how the new administrations will influence open source policy and the regulatory landscape in the years ahead.
- EU Investment Needed, but Fragmentation Persists. While there is increasing momentum for EU investment in open source, efforts across Europe remain fragmented, highlighting the need for a more coordinated and unified approach to strengthen the open source ecosystem.
Policy + regulations
The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is now in force as Regulation (EU) 2024/2847, setting cybersecurity standards for all digital products in the EU market. By December 2027, compliance will be mandatory, helping to reduce data breaches and build consumer trust. Member Communications/CTA
The Linux Foundation recently published an article that resonated strongly with our community, highlighting the importance of understanding the regulatory landscape surrounding open source communities, particularly focusing on trade and sanctions regulations such as those enforced by OFAC. The article emphasizes the significant impact these laws have on open source development, the risks of non-compliance, and how developers must remain vigilant to ensure legal collaboration across borders.
- Call to Action for Members:
- We strongly encourage you to circulate this article within your organization, particularly with your legal counsel, to ensure your teams fully understand the legal frameworks governing open source participation. Also, request to be added to the legal mailing list.
